Fertilization is key to establishing and maintaining a healthy, beautiful lawn. Fertilizer supplies grass with vital nutrients needed to help it grow vibrant and strong.
Establishing a routine for fertilizing your lawn regularly can help it grow lush, as well as fight off pests, disease, and weeds.
When to lay fertilizer will depend on the season sod is laid and the type of grass. But generally speaking, here are some best practices to follow.
When To Fertilize Your Lawn For The First Time
It’s typically best to wait 8-10 weeks after installation before fertilizing your new lawn for the first time—reason being, this gives the sod time to establish and strengthen first.
If fertilizer is applied too early it likely won’t do any good and may actually cause harm, particularly if it runs off into nearby waterways.
If you do want to fertilize at the time sod is installed, this isn’t completely out of the picture. If you do, just be sure to use a fertilizer specially formulated as a sod starter.
How Often To Fertilize Grass
From there, fertilize your lawn in 4-6 week intervals. From March to October is the prime season to fertilize.
What Fertilizer To Use
There are summer fertilizers that are best to use from March to July and fall fertilizers for August to October.
For new turf, fertilizers containing organic matter, nitrogen, potassium, iron, and phosphorus are best. After grass has established, either synthetic or organic fertilizers should work well.
