Every once in a while a summer or fall storm rolls in. While these are often a welcome refresher from the hot months and bring much needed moisture, heavy rain can be damaging to new sod—especially if it’s just recently been installed.
Heavy rainfall can overwater or rot new sod, prevent it from establishing roots properly, and even compromise the placement of the sod as the sod floats and shifts on top of the wet soil.
While we can’t control the weather, there are some preventative measures that can be taken to avoid rainfall damaging your sod, as well as solutions to preserve your sod if you do face a storm after it’s been installed.
What To Do About Heavy Rain On New Sod
Prevention is always key. Be sure to keep an eye on the forecast and if heavy rain is expected, put off installation and wait for a dry day.
Do keep in mind that a light drizzle shouldn’t hurt—it can actually help with the watering that’s required when sod is first laid. Just be sure to take rainfall into account when it comes to watering your new sod so you can avoid overwatering.
Also keep in mind it can be beneficial to install sod as soon as possible after rain stops. This allows you to take advantage of optimal moisture in the soil that can help sod take root.
If it’s raining during or shortly after installation, try covering the sod or soil with tarp or plywood. This can help prevent overwatering and also footprints from embedding in the soil.
