When it comes to the best time of year to lay your sod, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Let’s dive in!

Professional Recommendations For When To Lay Sod

When to lay sod largely depends on the type of grass. You’ll want to be sure to lay the sod during the active growing period of the specific turfgrass type you’re using.

For example, cool season grasses should be planted in early fall or early spring. The cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall are ideal for these types of grasses. Warm season grasses should be planted mid to late spring.

Sod really can be laid any time of year that the ground isn’t frozen and that there’s enough water to establish and nourish it. The key is to adequately water the sod depending on the temperature of the season.

Hobbs Turf Farms provides a premium Kentucky bluegrass blend that’s top-ranked by the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) for the Intermountain West area. This weed-free blend is ideal for its fine texture, rich, dark green color, hardiness, and drought tolerance.

Kentucky bluegrass flourishes throughout Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. For this particular type of grass, it’s generally best to lay it in early fall (mid-August to mid-October) or early spring (mid-March to mid-May) so it can quickly root and establish itself.

The benefits of early fall are cool temperatures, rainfall, and less competition from weeds. Fall is also when the growth of Kentucky bluegrass peaks.

Kentucky bluegrass can also be laid in early spring before it gets too hot and requires significantly more irrigation. With that said, Kentucky bluegrass can also be laid in the summer. It will just require more frequent watering. Watering in the early morning is ideal.
